Rob McConnell: Canada's cherished Big Band arranger

The last concert that Rob McConnell played was a sold-out run of shows in Toronto in December, 2008.

Rob McConnell: Canada's cherished Big Band arranger
The trombonist and Big Band leader died last Saturday of cancer. He was 75.

McConnell was best known for his Boss Brass band with sensational horn arrangements. He founded that band in 1968. He was also the arranger for various television shows in Canada and was hailed as one of the finest big band arrangers around.

Before forming his own band, he played the valve trombone in Toronto at several gigs. During his lifetime, he won the Grammy award for best jazz big band in 1984, received several Grammy nominations, won the Juno awards (the Canadian equivalent to the Grammy) three times, was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1997, and received the Order of Canada in 1998.

Rob McConnell has worked with various singers also, among them Mel Tormé and the Singers Unlimited.

JazzRadio's playlist features music from his The Rob McConnell Jive 5 and The Rob McConnell Tentet albums.

Greetings, I too have a love for arranging music. If your time permits, I would like to learn how to do what you do, and get paid for it.

My name is Calvin Brown, and I am a Band Director in the Atlanta, GA. area.
I spend a lot of time arranging music for my band and other bands in my surrounding area. I've gotten a lot of compliments from many of my colleagues within the profession. I have a great gift to hear and duplicate any song ever created, Operatic to Hip-Hop. Please tell me what I need to do to get started and how to market my arrangements for concert and marching bands. Since I spend a lot of time arranging popular songs that are not offered from the JWPepper website,I would like to find out how I could gain some financial aide doing it.

Please respond at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely Yours,

Calvin L. Brown

For the record,
I hate to be contradictory, but the last concert that Rob McConnell played was at the Brantford Jazz Festival in Sept. 2009, with the Tentet. Best regards, George
