Nicole Kidman and Penélope Cruz shine in Nine

How much glamour is too much glamour? In what Oprah Winfrey called a “visual stunning”, there is everything one might want, and even more, and that is the problem.

Nicole Kidman and Penélope Cruz shine in Nine
The famous Italian director Guido Contini (Daniel Day Lewis) is on the way of making his new movie “Italia”, already predestinated to be a hit. One week before the shooting starts the costumes are made, the scene is ready, the movie star is on her way, but there is no scenario. And one week before the shooting, Guido has everything: a wife, a mistress, a muse, a mother, a friend, but no inspiration. The two parallel lines are connected by this missing link: the lost inspiration, the main characters’ soul search.

Nicole Kidman and Penélope Cruz shine in Nine
The literally brilliant cast is almost blinding: Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz (Oscar® nomination for Best Supporting Act), Nicole Kidman , Judi Dench , Kate Hudson , Sophia Loren. Through this abundance of beauty, shine, dance and music, we can get a sense of the main character’s dilemma: in his desire to have it all, he lost his way. And it is only when he goes back to himself, that he can find his inspiration. The solution is not in what you want, but in what you need.

We recognize the director Rob Marshalls’ ability to make a musical without handicapping the movie, a gift we have already enjoyed in “Chicago” in 2002. The music performances are in symbiosis with the scenario, they detail, illustrate, and carry on the story to its happy ending…or rather, finally to its beginning.

Nine is coming out in German cinemas on the 25th of February 2010.
