His name is Phil and he is a six-month old Border Collie.
These dogs come from the Borders of Scotland and England and are considered the most intelligent of dogs. Indeed, Phil already knows the names of all of his toys.
The first weeks raised a lot of questions, so I decided to search for a dog-training school. I had some clear ideas about what I did not want in a dog school - but then I found one that ticked all the right boxes for Phil and me.
I liked Maja Nowak's philosophy straight away because she handles things differently from most. She talks dog-language, if I can put it that way. Living with a pack of 10 dogs for seven years, she took the time to observe them at close quarters "talking" to each other.
Maja Nowak shows you how to lead a dog by restricting his movements and using a warning signal. The key is to change from spoken- to body-language, which is what dogs understand best.
After finishing my first class with Phil, it was clear to me that he and I were now beginning to speak the same language (I think he agreed).
Maja Nowak is an acknowledged expert on the training of dogs and - of equal importance - their owners! She also trains man's best friend to work as "Therapy Dogs", providing comfort and affection to people in hospitals and nursing homes.
Maja is also very well-educated herself, having a degree in animal psychology and related disciplines.
You may also know Maja as Maike Nowak, a successful and well-known singer-songwriter for almost 20 years, and a well-known face on Television.
I know her as the woman who got Phil and me talking the same language.
