Jazz icon Palmieri's wife shot
The wife of Eddie Palmieri, legendary Latin jazz pianist, bandleader, and composer, was shot last week by her neighbor in the lobby of their home in Forest Hills, Queens.

Iraida Palmieri was treated and released from the hospital and luckily, she's in a good condition. The 81 year old neighbor, Maria Cartagena, was charged with attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and assault for shooting at Iraida Palmieri, 73. "Move over or I'm going to kill you," Cartagena told Palmieri, then drew a revolver from the fanny pack clasped around her waist and fired one shot, according to a criminal complaint.

The couples lived a floor apart, and the women had been feuding over noise, filing dueling complaints to the city's 311 hot line, according to a law enforcement official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

The 9 time Grammy award winner Eddie Palmieri, who turned 73 last December and who is also heavily presented in JazzRadio's weekly Latin Jazz show "JazzRio" with Joanna Ratajczak, wrote a piece called "Iraida" which first appeared on his 1996 album Vortex and which has been a constant part of his live repertoire. One of his upcoming shows had to be rescheduled for April 9th at the Tarrytown Music Hall in the Hudson Valley.

The most important music prize over here in Germany is the ECHO which was given away a couple of weeks ago here in Berlin.

Jazz finds an ECHO in 2010
After the creation of a Classic ECHO, 2010 is the year that the first ECHO Jazz will be celebrated. The award winning musicians were announced today from the Deutsche Phono-Akademie. Among the winners are Melody Gardot, Branford Marsalis, Michael Wollny, Klaus Doldinger, Roy Hargrove, Wolfgang Haffner, and Curtis Stigers. A total of 31 categories comprise this newly created award which will be handed over in a ceremony on May 8th at the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum. That's certainly a nod to the Ruhr area as this year's European Cultural City.

There's one artist which wins two awards in this first year: Diana Krall (photo) for "Best Seller of the Year" and for "DVD of the Year".
