Full- or Part-time?
Full-time
You will be treated and respected as a full-time member of our team and we expect you to accept fully the responsibilities that go with that.
Although we work generally normal office hours, Monday to Friday, we do have listener and client events on some evenings and occasionally at weekends.
You will be required to attend a proportion of these, at our discretion.
We are a small team and our interns, therefore, are expected to help across the full range of JazzRadio’s operations – Programming, Production, Administration, Events and Marketing.
We do not accept applications for just one aspect of our operations.
You could be offered the opportunity to broadcast on one of our evening shows, after suitable training.
This cannot be guaranteed but we believe that, if they are willing to learn, most people have it within them to become a competent broadcaster.
The minimum length of full-time internships is three months and we actually prefer longer.
The reason is that it takes up to a month for interns to get on top of all aspects of our operations and become really useful, from JazzRadio’s point of view.
Internships at JazzRadio are NOT paid and we will consider applications from people with part-time evening or weekend jobs.
You must, however, be clear about this when you apply, if that is what you intend.
Part-time
Part-time internships are available only to interns who wish to train as broadcasters and who can make a serious commitment to be available on one or two evenings each week for a period of at least six months.
Your training will be during live programmes, with an experienced broadcaster,
It won’t work if you do not take it seriously enough to give your part-time internship the necessary priority.
We have a low tolerance for cancellations of training sessions etc., at short notice, and they are likely to lead to the termination of your internship.
Age Requirememt
You must be aged 18 years or over. As JazzRadio is a small company, we are not able to offer internships to school students but we will sometimes arrange for a full-day visit for any school student who is interested in a career in broadcasting.
Do I need a Background in Media Education?
No, you don’t. We welcome applications from people of diverse educational experience.
Business and Marketing students, for example, can make a particularly valuable contribution.
Language Requirement
JazzRadio is a German radio station so we require only that our interns speak good German. English (and other languages) are useful but are not a requirement. (Members of our current team speak a total of 10 languages).
Equal Opportunity
JazzRadio is an Equal Opportunity organisation. We do not discriminate on the grounds of nationality, gender, physical handicap or indeed for any other reason.
We believe diversity is a strength.
Reference
If you acquit yourself well, JazzRadio will provide you with an excellent reference and useful career advice at the end of your internship.
But we do not believe in bullshitting other prospective employers and will give an accurate, if supportive report.
For example, the reference will state how many days you have been with JazzRadio and also give the total of days when you were absent.
Can I get a job with JazzRadio after my Internship?
This is unlikely since most of our team have been with us for some years and there is little turnover.
Having said that, most of our JazzRadio staff and broadcasters first joined as interns, so if vacancies do occur, our former interns are the first people we normally turn to.
